What to Check Before Buying a Used Car: A Mechanic's Checklist

A practical checklist for inspecting a used car or truck before you buy: paperwork, cold start, leaks, tires, test drive, and when to get a pre-purchase inspection.

A used car can look perfect in photos and still hide expensive problems. You do not need to be a mechanic to catch the obvious ones. Use this checklist when you look at the vehicle, and if it passes, have a mechanic inspect it before you pay.

1. Paperwork and history

  • Make sure the VIN on the title matches the dashboard and door jamb
  • Check the title for salvage, rebuilt, or flood branding
  • Run a vehicle history report and ask for service records

2. Start it cold

Ask the seller not to start the car before you arrive. A cold start reveals hard starting, rattles, smoke, and noises that disappear once the engine warms up. Every warning light should turn on briefly when you switch the key on, then go off. A check engine light that never turns on at all can mean the bulb was removed.

3. Look underneath and under the hood

  • Oil, coolant, or transmission fluid leaks and fresh drips on the ground
  • Milky oil on the dipstick or under the oil cap
  • Rust on the frame, brake lines, or suspension
  • Mud, silt, or a musty smell inside, which can mean flood damage

4. Tires and brakes

Uneven tire wear points to alignment or suspension problems. Mismatched brands on the same axle, or very new tires on a car with otherwise worn parts, are worth asking about. Look through the wheels at the brake rotors for deep grooves or a heavy lip on the edge.

5. Test drive

Drive at least 15 to 20 minutes on local roads and the highway. The transmission should shift smoothly without slipping, flaring, or delays. The car should track straight, brake without pulling or vibration, and not make clunks over bumps. Test the A/C, heat, windows, locks, and infotainment while you are at it.

6. Get a pre-purchase inspection

A mechanic can see what a buyer cannot: stored and recently cleared trouble codes, leaks hidden above the transmission, worn suspension parts, and the condition of the engine and brakes with the car on a lift. At 86 MotorSports Garage you can bring the vehicle to our Hoschton shop, or we can come to the seller with a mobile pre-purchase inspection within 30 miles.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it?

Usually, yes. It costs far less than most of the problems it can uncover, and what we find gives you a reason to negotiate the price or to walk away.

What if the seller will not allow an inspection?

Treat it as a warning sign. A seller with nothing to hide usually agrees to an inspection, especially when the mechanic can come to them.

Where can I get a used car inspected near Hoschton?
