If you register a vehicle in Gwinnett County or one of the other metro Atlanta counties that require testing, it has to pass an emissions test before you can renew your tag. A failed test is frustrating, but the report usually tells you where to start.
How the test works on newer cars
On most cars and light trucks the station plugs into the diagnostic port instead of measuring the tailpipe. It checks two things: whether the check engine light is commanded on, and whether the car's readiness monitors have finished their self-tests. Either one can cause a failure, even if the car seems to drive fine.
Most common reasons for failing
- Check engine light on for any reason
- Readiness monitors not set after a battery change or cleared codes
- EVAP system leaks, including a worn gas cap
- Oxygen sensors or a catalytic converter below efficiency
- Misfires and EGR problems
Why clearing the code does not work
Clearing codes turns the light off, but it also resets every readiness monitor. A car that was just cleared will usually be rejected as not ready, and if the fault is still there the light comes back. The reliable path is to find and repair the cause, then drive the car normally so the monitors can complete before you retest.
What to bring to the shop
Bring the failed test report. It shows the codes and which monitors were not ready, which saves diagnostic time. We do not perform the emissions test ourselves; we diagnose and repair the problem at our Hoschton shop so the car is ready to pass when you retest at a testing station.
Frequently asked questions
Does Jackson County require an emissions test?
Georgia requires emissions testing only in certain metro Atlanta counties, such as Gwinnett. Check the Georgia Clean Air Force website for the current list of counties and which vehicles must be tested.
How long after a repair can I retest?
Once the repair is done, the readiness monitors need some normal driving, often a few days of mixed city and highway driving, to complete. We can check the monitor status for you before you go back to the station.
